Do Space Heaters Save On Energy Costs?

On cool winter nights, nothing can bring relief to your freezing toes like the low hum of a space heater. It seems as if space heaters are everywhere and they show their value at your chilly office building or in that stubborn room that never seems to get warm. This got us thinking, do space heaters save money or do they burn up your hard earned money to keep your feet toasty?

After some research, we were surprised to learn that certain types of space heaters can in fact save you money when heating your home. According to www.energy.gov, radiant space heaters are more efficient at heating.

"Although most space heaters work by convection (the circulation of air in a room), some rely on radiant heating. Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly heats objects and people within their line of sight, and are a more efficient choice when you will be in a room for only a few hours and can stay within the line of sight of the heater. They can also be more efficient when you will be using a room for a short period because they save energy by directly heating the occupant of the room and the occupant's immediate surroundings rather than the whole room". -US Department of Energy

So, instead of blasting 93 degree air from your HVAC system, break out that space heater and know that you're saving a buck or two.
